  To put some more general gloss over it, (I am grateful to 
  Thomas Place for this insight) SFX really sets of with a conservative
  view of the world that says that the information industry is not
  going to change. You will still have commercial vendors that open
  closed informations systems. SFX makes this more bearable because
  it allows you to link (from a user's point of view) those
  otherwise disparate systems together, so that the user 
  can navigate them, be it that the disparate systems are
  still apparent. 

  What we do here is different. We want to assemble an open, public
  dataset of information that is supported through donations of 
  time by voluneteers and cash from outside sponsors. This a
  concept that we want to show, will work in academic communities
  where a culture of sharing is quite common, not only for 
  metadata but for the full text to. It is up to us to show that
  this vision works.
