To put some more general gloss over it, (I am grateful to
Thomas Place for this insight) SFX really sets of with a conservative
view of the world that says that the information industry is not
going to change. You will still have commercial vendors that open
closed informations systems. SFX makes this more bearable because
it allows you to link (from a user's point of view) those
otherwise disparate systems together, so that the user
can navigate them, be it that the disparate systems are
still apparent.
What we do here is different. We want to assemble an open, public
dataset of information that is supported through donations of
time by voluneteers and cash from outside sponsors. This a
concept that we want to show, will work in academic communities
where a culture of sharing is quite common, not only for
metadata but for the full text to. It is up to us to show that
this vision works.
