<font size="2" face="sans-serif">I copy below a mapping from our metadata for microdata to the proposed RePEc standard, based on a specific dataset example, along with some suggestions from our colleague Matthew Welch about how to make the two compatible and the reasons why we use DDI for microdata. <ul style="padding-left: 18pt"><font size="2" face="sans-serif">I attach a spreadsheet which Mehmood and I have put together in which we attempt to match how we think your DDI standard (fields) match to the suggested ReDIF fields for the microdata in our catalog. I also attach the actual DDI that our examples come from. You are welcome to pass these on to the REPEC group.</font><br>

<font size="2" face="sans-serif">Some of the suggested ReDIF fileds are a little hard to understand seeing them for the first time. A couple of examples from the REPEC people for a survey\microdata (with datasets) would be helpful in understanding what the intended use of each field is. The intended use for each field and in general is a little blurry for us here.</font><br>

<font size="2" face="sans-serif"> It would seem though from what we can see, that a mapping or transform (between ReDIF and DDI) could be done for nearly all fields.</font><br>
<br>
<font size="2" face="sans-serif">Note: it should not be hard for them to download a DDI (and they are all available via our API) to do a transform on that to fit their needs. If though it is deemed strategically important for us to foster a strong link with REPEC then it would not be terribly hard for us to provide the transform on our side in the API - that they could pull.</font><br>
<br>
<font size="2" face="sans-serif">Note: we use this DDI standard because it is considered the international standard for survey microdata. It comes out of academic institutions and is now used in most of the major survey archives in the World. This includes the ICPSR at the University of Michigan, Harvard Dataverse, UK Data Archive, University of Berkeley Computer-assisted Survey Methods Program (CSM) and many many more high Income and now low and middle income national statistics offices. I suspect that Repec may at some point be looking to these other institutions in a similar way to us - being flexible enough to be able to map to the de facto standard for unit level (microdata) from surveys i.e. DDI would help them with those greater connections.</font><br>

We want to encompass basically anything a data provider would want to <br>
index. But I do not think we want to add a myriad of template types. The <br>
best would be to have a single data template that is flexible enough.<br>
